never ending story?

WASHINGTON — As part of an information offensive in Iraq, the U.S. military is secretly paying Iraqi newspapers to publish stories written by American troops in an effort to burnish the image of the U.S. mission in Iraq.

THE DRUNK

a poem by tori
my adorable and infinitely talented daugther!
He’s kind of an older man
Who drinks as much as he can.
He knows everyone at the bar
And they know never to let ‘him’ drive a car.
He has no family, and just a part time job
Not any sober friends–except Bartender Bob.
It seems he wears the same clothes every day–
He probably does, since he only buys beer with his pay.
That same pair of old blue jeans
The ones with all the ripped up seams.
Wearing his Rolling Stones shirt,
He thinks he is such a flirt.
But talking to girls, his words are all slurry
He thinks he’s getting lucky, but his vision’s just blurry.
His eyes are always bloodshot red
And with a beer-belly like that, he looks very well fed.
No one’s really sure of his actual height
Cause he slouches in his stool every single night.
His dirty blonde hair is literally dirty–
Looks like he hasn’t showered since he was like thirty.
His life might seems sad
But it’s really not all that bad.
At least he always has a smile on his face
Except for the time that cop sprayed him with mace.
(at least her mom wasn’t the subject of this poetic assignment -ha!)

Miami police plan random ID checks of citizens
Snip from AP story:
Miami police announced Monday they will stage random shows of force at hotels, banks and other public places to keep terrorists guessing and remind people to be vigilant. Deputy Police Chief Frank Fernandez said officers might, for example, surround a bank building, check the IDs of everyone going in and out and hand out leaflets about terror threats.
another (followup – check the dates!) story claiming miami police plan ‘in your face shows of force’ but won’t be checking ids so as to not threaten individual rights……….
no doubt that the reversal on the ‘id checks’ wasn’t their idea.. and prob’lee dampened their wood over the whole idea.
DARN!

definitely not ‘Richie’ cunningham..

what kills me is his teary-eyed statement…… ‘i can’t change what i’ve done.. but i can atone’
give me a fucking break.
and what about his wife……. all the reports mention how she is ’standing by his side’… and all i can think is WHY? did she know where her candelabras, leather sofa and 2 Laser Shot shooting simulators (not to mention the rolls) were coming from? did she wonder? and if so.. did she verbally question? if a guy has so little respect for the honor of public trust that he’s been fortunate enough to have garnered.. does she really think that he might hold the sanctity of their marraige in any higher esteem?? seems to me that the only thing that cunningham likely regrets……is the inconvenience of getting caught. and as far as mrs cunningham… she gets zero respect from me.. as she’s either complicitous OR she’s a doormat. (not sure which is worse!)
In return for nailing down defense deals, Cunningham was given hundreds of thousands of dollars, furniture, rugs, use of a yacht, and to complete the cliché, a Rolls Royce. He faces 10 years in prison but probably won’t get hit with that much time in pokey since he’s promised to sing to prosecutors.
The papers don’t really explain what happened to the Pentagon contracts Cunningham rigged. And TP sees only a WP editorial raising a related issue: How exactly does the appropriations system work—or not work—given that one congressman seems to have the power to shovel money to specific contractors, crooked or not? (Cunningham’s shenanigans were made all the easier by the fact that, as USAT recently reminded, the contracts were part of the military’s classified, “black budget.”)
