‘Twas the night before implementation
December 23, 2008 · 1 Comment
‘Twas the night before implementation and all through the house,
Not a program was working, not even a browse.
The programmers hung by their tubes in despair,
With hopes that a miracle soon would be there.
The users were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of inquiries danced in their heads.
When out in the machine room there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my desk to see what was the matter.
And what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a super programmer ( with a six-pack of beer ).
Her resume glowed with experience so rare,
She turned out great code with a bit-pusher’s flair.
More rapid than eagles, her programs they came,
And she cursed and muttered and called them by name.
On Update! On Add! On Inquiry! On Delete!
On Batch Jobs! On Closings! On Functions Complete!
Her eyes were glazed over, fingers nimble and lean,
From weekends and nites in front of a screen.
A wink of her eye and a twitch of her head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.
She spoke not a word, but went straight to her work,
Turning specs into code; then turned with a jerk.
And laying her finger upon the “ENTER” key,
The system came up and worked perfectly.
The updates updated; the deletes, they deleted;
The inquiries inquired, and closings completed.
She tested each whistle, and tested each bell,
With nary a bomb, and all had gone well.
The system was finished, the tests were concluded,
The users’ last changes were even included.
And the user exclaimed with a snarl and a taunt,
“It’s just what I asked for, but not what I want!”

glad to hear you are well.. is that your son on your facebook page? nice looking young man!! good for you.
things are good for me…. although, i have to say it has been an interesting ride ; )
we had another child.. a girl.. got married.. were happy for a while.. and then ended up not being very nice to each other.. and divorced. now that no one owes anyone child support, we’re actually quite good friends.. funny how that all works – ha! kids are good.. tori is brilliant and beautiful and excruciatingly honest and strong willed and going to school.. while working and living with her much older boyfriend (sound familiar?? – ha!).. but to tell the truth.. she’s got a much stronger sense of self than i did at her age. justin is working for his dad in the business he built for himself. he actually practically took over an entire industry in the greater richmond area.. he’s such a good bullshitter – ha! justin is motivated, happy go lucky, kind and generous and sensitive and has an amazing work ethic. he’s found himself is some very heavy situations where he could have easily chosen to avoid and not ‘do the right thing’ and… i am en-heartened by his willingness to proverbially stand up in this world. i love having adult children! the dynamic of our relationship has shifted to a very kind loving place… now that there’s no longer the push-pull of active parenting. and so i am honored they remain such a big part of my life.
moved to nc just a tad over 2 years ago, now. was in the va beach/norfolk area for 8 years.. before that germany for 2.. had moved there from va beach… where i’d moved from richmond. huh.. yeah.. that is a lot of moving – ha!
got my first IT job in germany.. having absolutely no experience but an eager attitude.. surprisingly they gave me the job. it was desktop and network support for an army mwr program in heidelberg. when we moved back to the states, i got another desktop support job with a shipping line. after a year or so they dumped shipboard network and then domino support on me.. so i decided to get my certifications. lots of awesome travel (japan, london, hawaii, germany..) i was there for 3 years.. and then i heard a local national retailer was looking to grow a notes developer.. so that was my deal with the devil. worked there for 2 years.. which is like 5 years in the real world (they move at breakneck speed).. but it was irreplaceable experience because they let you take on any project (translate as: as much work as) you want.. learned sooo much.. got my development certs and the got a call from another company who knew someone who knew someone who knew me -ha! i wasn’t looking but they asked for a number… i gave them one and they offered me the job. it was also a great work experience. was there almost 4 years.. then they were bought out by a microsoft shop.. so i put my resume out there and got a call for this job. it’s been great here.. but unfortunately the economy hasn’t been kind and they’ve made some rather costly business choices.. so…. fingers crossed but looking anyway.
as for casey the girl.. the person.. the rebel.. the geek.. the friend..the mother.. the lover.. and shoe fanatic.. i am centered and happy and productive and socially conscious and aware and pretty much at peace.
i wanted to let you know things for me have turned out well.. and that i wish you peace and wellness.. i also wanted you to know that i apologize.. for everything. that nothing was your fault. and that you and every other man after you had absolutely zero chance with me. it was always the ending i was most comfortable with. so.. don’t think anything about it.. i am sorry i hurt you.
i hope you voted for obama! (haha)
hope u stay in touch…
have a great december day!
casey
